Students will learn karate, basic self-defense (both for stranger-danger and bullying), skill development, leadership, flexibility, focus, dedication, and self-control. The main focus of this program is character development through the martial arts. Each class will introduce new skills and ideas while building what they have already learned.
Class meets one day per week for twelve weeks. At the end of the three month course, students will have increased skills and (at the instructor’s discretion) may have the opportunity to advance to a new level. This advancement includes the proper execution of punches, kicks, blocks, stances and moving basics as well as demonstration of character development in accordance with the integrity of martial arts.
Karate is both a physically and mentally challenging activity. Every student is active for the entire class and encouraged to strive for individual success while building character and self-discipline. The karate program is a lifelong fitness activity centered on responsibility, self-control, and integrity.
As students learn and progress, we encourage them to enroll for both spring and fall sessions of the program.
Class sizes are limited at every location! Please register early if you plan to participate. For your convenience, we accept online registration. Once a class is full, you will see that it is no longer available for online registration. We will accept late registrations providing space is still available, however there will be no pro-rating for those registering after the beginning of the session.
Students must be between the ages of 5 and 11; no experience is necessary.
$150 (YMCA Members)
$170 (Non-YMCA Members)
This covers the cost of a full three months of karate (12 classes on location and the option for an additional 12 classes at Southeast Karate). This amount is due upon registration, your place in class is not held unless payment is processed. If your student does not own a uniform one must be purchased for participation. Uniforms can be ordered with registration through Southeast Karate for an additional $40. Family discounts are not available.
There is a belt exam at the end of each session. Student participation and eligibility are at Sensei's discretion. Should your student be eligible to participate, the cost is $15. This fee is due one week before the date of the exam so that belt orders can be made in time. Exams are held at Southeast Karate LLC; located at 3795 E. North Street, Greenville, SC 29615. Exams are an opportunity for parents to see what children have learned and celebrate their accomplishment!
If you are unable to be present for the belt exam at the end of the session, a “make-up” test can be scheduled for an additional fee.
All students are required to wear a white karate uniform or Gi. If your child does not own a gi, you may purchase one upon registration through Southeast Karate LLC for $40. Hair must be secured back away from the face. No jewelry is allowed in class; this is for safety because karate is a contact sport. Although we take karate class barefoot, students must wear shoes to and from class.
For the first class, students should plan to wear comfortable gym clothes (unless they already own a uniform). Students will be fitted for uniforms and uniforms purchased will be distributed purchased within the first two weeks of classes. Uniforms should be washed and dried to shrink. DO NOT wash the belt. If the pants and sleeves are still long, fold the material under and hem. Sleeves should stop at wrist, pants should stop at ankle. DO NOT cut excess material, it can be let out as the student grows.
YMCA classes will be taught by Sensei Alejandro Rodriguez (owner), Sensei Bekah Benham, and Senpai Zach Hirschkorn. Please click here to learn more about our awesome instructors!
There is no YMCA karate class anytime school is canceled for inclement weather, breaks, or holidays. In the case of snow days and holidays, to ensure that students from each location have the opportunity to attend 12 classes, students are encouraged to “make-up” class at one of the other YMCA locations (if available) OR attend class at Southeast Karate LLC.
In addition, Kazoku Karate is extending the option to attend one additional karate class per week of the 12-week-session at Southeast Karate’s principal location 3795 E. North Street, Greenville, SC 29615. This service is included at no additional cost and is intended to broaden student’s exposure and experience. Class schedules can be found online at www.southeastkarate.com.
All information regarding scheduling updates and/or cancellations, and belt exams will be communicated via email, and students and families can expect to be included in Dojo communication as an extension of our karate community.
